We want to recruit a confident, friendly and highly-motivated parliamentary officer to join our communications team. You will have a background in parliamentary affairs and engagement with knowledge of, and a passion for, local government and public service reform.
Job Introduction:
- To work effectively for a cross-party organisation where all three major parties have a say, you will need the ability to implement a range of parliamentary lobbying and influencing techniques.
- This is an opportunity to work in a prominent London-wide role. Exceptional written and oral communication skills are essential, as is a commitment to London and its people.
- You will need to be a team player and be confident talking to colleagues and stakeholders at all levels.
The job includes planning, research and writing plus daily contact and relationship-building with London’s Parliamentarians and their staff, as well as a leading role in the Secretariat for the APPG for London.
At present, members of this team are currently hybrid working, combining office and remote working, with an expectation to be in the office for set days each week, team awaydays and organisation-wide events. Occasional evening working is also required.

Main purpose of the job:
- To develop London Councils’ relationships with London MPs and Peers of all political parties, in particular, engaging them with our work on local government finance, housing and homelessness and public service reform.
- To support the London APPG in agreeing and delivering a range of activities to build impact and a common purpose among London MPs and Lords.
- To work with officers in London Councils to engage with London’s parliamentarians to advance London Councils’ Shared Ambitions – our priorities as agreed by our Leaders’ Committee.
Responsibilities include (full responsibilities can be found via the link below):
- To develop, implement and monitor parliamentary strategies for London Councils’ policy and lobbying priorities.
- To work with London Councils’ Policy and Services teams to develop London Councils’ relationships with MPs and Peers.
- To monitor the work of Parliament and other bodies and to provide research and monitoring information to colleagues and develop their knowledge of Parliament, as appropriate.
- Organise briefings for parliamentarians, civil servants and national partners on the organisation’s position to influence legislation, debate and decisions.
- To lead special projects – from conception to delivery – which aim to further London Councils’ lobbying priorities.
- Work closely with the rest of the Communications, Media and Public Affairs team to evaluate and report on London Councils’ parliamentary and influencing work.
- Work closely with the rest of the Communications, Media and Public Affairs team to plan and manage London Councils’ presence at party political conferences and other events in the political calendar, and to represent the organisation, as required, at these and other events.
- To play a role in actively promoting parliamentary campaigns and lobbying activity on London Councils’ website and social media channels.
